Suffolk County Divorce Lawyers

Suffolk County Matrimonial and Family Law Attorneys
Many family law matters need to be handled in a way that protects and strengthens long-term relationships. We offer a smooth & simple path to a satisfactory result.

At Hillen Druek, PLLC, we understand that family law matters are not just legal issues. They are deeply personal turning points that affect your home, your finances, and your future. Whether you are considering divorce, dealing with a custody dispute, or trying to make sense of support obligations, you deserve clear, honest information and practical guidance from the start. Our attorneys bring more than thirty years of combined experience serving individuals and families across Suffolk County and Long Island, and we approach every case with a focus on clarity, efficiency, and respect for what you are going through.

We built our firm around a simple idea: when you have the right information upfront, you can make better decisions and feel more confident about the path ahead. Many people come to us feeling uncertain about what will happen next. They are worried about their children, their financial stability, and how long the process will take. Our role is to replace that uncertainty with a clear roadmap. Our Suffolk County divorce lawyers take the time to explain your rights, outline realistic expectations, and help you understand how the law applies to your specific situation.

Our Approach to Family Law and Divorce in Suffolk County

Family law cases in Suffolk County follow established legal principles, but no two cases are exactly alike. Your unique circumstances, from your income and property to your preferred parenting arrangement, will shape how your case moves forward. We do not rely on one-size-fits-all strategies. Instead, we tailor our approach to fit your goals while keeping the process as streamlined as possible.

We prioritize communication at every stage. When you work with our firm, you will know what is happening in your case, why certain steps are being taken, and what options are available to you. This level of transparency helps reduce stress and allows you to stay focused on what matters most: protecting your interests and planning for the future.

Our attorneys handle a wide range of matrimonial and family law matters in Suffolk County, including divorce, child custody and visitation, child support, spousal support, and equitable distribution of marital assets. We also assist clients with post-judgment modifications and enforcement issues when circumstances change after a court order is in place.

Divorce in Suffolk County

Divorce is often the central issue that brings clients to our office, but it is rarely just about ending a marriage. It involves untangling finances, making decisions about children, and setting the foundation for your life moving forward. In New York, divorce is typically based on an “irretrievable breakdown” of the marriage, which allows couples to proceed without assigning blame. However, even in uncontested cases, there are important legal and financial considerations that must be addressed.

We guide you through each component of the divorce process, including:

  • Filing and responding to divorce papers
  • Identifying and valuing marital property
  • Addressing retirement accounts, real estate, and other assets
  • Determining child custody and parenting schedules
  • Calculating child support and spousal maintenance

Our goal is to help you reach a fair and workable resolution as efficiently as possible. In many cases, this can be accomplished through negotiation or settlement discussions. When necessary, we are fully prepared to advocate for you in court to protect your rights.

Child Custody and Parenting Arrangements

For parents, custody is often the most emotionally challenging aspect of a family law case. We recognize how important it is to maintain strong relationships with your children and to create a stable, predictable environment for them. In Suffolk County, courts focus on the best interests of the child when making custody determinations. This includes evaluating factors such as each parent’s involvement, the child’s needs, and the ability of the parents to cooperate.

We work closely with you to develop a parenting plan that reflects your family’s unique circumstances. Whether you are seeking joint custody, sole custody, or a specific visitation schedule, we help you understand how the court is likely to view your case and what steps you can take to strengthen your position.

Our approach is practical and forward-looking. We aim to reduce conflict where possible while ensuring that your parental rights are protected. When disputes cannot be resolved through negotiation, we are prepared to present a strong case on your behalf.

Child Support and Spousal Maintenance

Financial support is another critical component of family law cases. New York uses statutory guidelines to calculate child support, but many factors can influence the final amount, including income, childcare expenses, and health insurance costs. Spousal maintenance, commonly referred to as alimony, is also determined based on specific formulas and considerations, such as the length of the marriage and each spouse’s earning capacity.

We help you understand how these calculations apply to your situation and what you can expect in terms of financial obligations or entitlements. Our attorneys take a thorough approach to reviewing income, assets, and expenses to ensure that support arrangements are fair and sustainable.

Property Division and Asset Protection

One of the most complex aspects of divorce is dividing marital property. In New York, assets are distributed according to the principle of equitable distribution, which means a fair but not necessarily equal division. This can include everything from the family home and bank accounts to retirement plans, business interests, and personal property.

We take the time to identify all relevant assets and liabilities, assess their value, and develop a strategy for achieving a fair outcome. For many of our clients, protecting long-term financial stability is a top priority. We focus on practical solutions that allow you to move forward with confidence.

In cases involving more complex financial issues, such as business ownership or high-value assets, we work diligently to ensure that nothing is overlooked. Our goal is to provide you with a clear picture of your financial position both during and after the divorce.

A Focus on Efficiency and Clarity

We know that legal proceedings can feel complicated and even overwhelming, especially when they involve your family and your future. That is why we emphasize efficiency from the very beginning. By providing clear guidance and setting realistic expectations, we help you avoid unnecessary delays and complications.

Our attorneys are committed to making the process as straightforward as possible. We explain each step in plain language, answer your questions promptly, and keep your case moving forward. This approach not only reduces stress but also helps you achieve a resolution more quickly.

Serving Clients Across Suffolk County

With offices in Islandia and Westhampton Beach, Hillen Druek, PLLC, is well-positioned to serve clients throughout Suffolk County. We understand the local courts, procedures, and expectations, which allows us to provide informed and effective representation.

Whether you are at the beginning of the process or dealing with an ongoing issue, we are here to help you navigate your legal options. Our firm is built on long-term relationships, and we take pride in supporting our clients not just through a single case but through the various stages of life that may require legal guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions on New York Divorce & Family Law Matters

How long does a divorce take in Suffolk County?

The timeline for a divorce can vary depending on the complexity of the case and whether the parties can reach an agreement. Uncontested divorces may be completed in a matter of months, while contested cases involving custody or financial disputes can take longer. We work to move your case forward as efficiently as possible while protecting your interests.

Do I have to go to court for a divorce?

Not always. Many divorce cases are resolved through negotiation or settlement without the need for a trial. However, court appearances may still be required for certain steps in the process. If your case cannot be resolved outside of court, we are prepared to advocate for you before a judge.

How is child custody decided?

Custody decisions in New York are based on the best interests of the child. Courts consider factors such as each parent’s relationship with the child, their ability to provide a stable environment, and their willingness to cooperate with the other parent. We help you understand how these factors apply to your case and develop a strategy accordingly.

What factors affect spousal maintenance?

Spousal maintenance is determined based on statutory guidelines as well as factors such as the length of the marriage, each spouse’s income, and their future earning potential. We provide detailed guidance on how these rules apply to your situation.

Can support or custody orders be changed later?

Yes, orders related to custody, child support, and spousal maintenance can be modified if there is a significant change in circumstances. We assist clients with both seeking and responding to modification requests.

Our History
A Boutique Practice Built on Experience

Hillen Druek, PLLC was formed as the natural evolution of a well-established matrimonial practice that originated as part of Vlahadamis & Hillen, LLC, founded in 2010. After years of serving as the Managing Director of the firm’s matrimonial and family law department, Mr. Hillen sought to isolate and elevate that practice into a dedicated boutique firm focused exclusively on matrimonial and family law.

In furtherance of that vision, Mr. Hillen established Hillen Law, PLLC, with the goal of creating a cohesive, high-level matrimonial practice built upon experience, efficiency, and client-focused representation. Thereafter, the firm focused on identifying and partnering with premier talent in the field.

Upon the addition of Mr. Druek in 2025, the firm was rebranded as Hillen Druek, PLLC to reflect both the evolution of the practice and the acquisition of new leadership. While the name reflects a modernized firm, it is built upon a longstanding foundation of matrimonial and family law experience, now refined into a dedicated boutique practice.
